PC/OS 2008 and PowerPC

June 29, 2008

I have had inquiries as to why I cant create a PPC release.  Well, I recently got a PPC machine and will be building PC/OS for the PowerPC.  It will take awhile as building for a PowerPC is different than x86.  Also, only Open Server System will be PowerPC.  I havent had enough request for a desktop version but a few server requests.

OpenOffice.org 2.4.1 released

June 29, 2008

OpenOffice 2.4,1  for PC/OS and some other Debian based distros has been released and is available from the download sites.  Make sure you follow all directions for a successful install. So what Debian based distros will this work on?

LinuxMint 5

Ubuntu 8.04

Sidux

Debian 4

PC/OS 7.10.2

PC/OS OpenWorkstation 2008

PC/OS Open Server System 2008.1

June 25, 2008

I reissued the ISO because several of my server users wanted other features and since it was still young enough that I went ahead and added the features and rereleased the ISO, the reissue contains everything the old release had and if you are happy with the first release there is no benefit to upgrade.

The only new feature is that Open Server System now contains Opera and not Ephiphany.

Roadmap of PC/OS 2008 series

June 23, 2008

Some people have asked what my plans are going forward so I decided to put together a roadmap for PC/OS so my users and anyone interested will know what to expect.

PC/OS FeaturePak 1 will be released on July 3rd.  FeaturePaks contain applications not included with PC/OS due to size and importance.  So far in the lineup, TrueCrypt, Pencil, Cheese, HotWire, QTTube.  I plan to add more and user feedback is eencouraged

PC/OS Maintenance Pack 1 will be released July 7th more or less.  Maintenance Pack 1 will contain all fixes and updates to the PC/OS OpenWorkstation 2008 and 2008 Lite.  Appliance and Server will have seperate maintenance packs due to their dedicated nature.  Maintenance Pack 1 will also contain fixes for the cluster that happened with the release

PC/OS Open Server System 2008 Maintenance Pack 1 will be released on July 23rd.  This will contain all fixes for Server including Apache and other server applications.  If the EeePC drivers are finished at this time Maintenance Pack 1 for Appliance will also be released.

September 30 – October 5th PC/OS OpenWorkstation 2008: E17 will be released.  This release will not be a replacement for XFCE.  It will be maintained by a different person and not myself after we have something usable I will release a Beta version LIVE CD ONLY and until its at the quality to where it can share the PC/OS name it will have a codename, TBA

October 14th PC/OS OpenWorkstation 2008: Appliance R1 will be released.  This will contain all the updates and an important new feature, the Sugar interface.  Users have requested the interface and I have been testing it for awhile now.  This release will still contain the XFCE desktop and users will have the oppurtunity at GDM to use whichever one they want.

In November, dont know when yet, PC/OS DesktopWorkstation 2008 will be released.  This release is the first totally commercial release of PC/OS.  It will retail for $49.00 from On-Disk.com and will contain RealBASIC Professional, CrossOver Office and LinDVD from Corel.  This version had to be commercial Im afraid because I have to be able to pay the licensing fees for the software included and will hopefully help the project be able to afford to pay the bills.

December 11th, PC/OS OpenWorkstation 2008 R1 will be released as will Open Server System 2008 R1.  PC/OS OpenWorkstation 2009 will also be released at this time as well.  which will be based on Ubuntu 8.10.

This roadmap is not set in stone.  There are many variables such as coding problems, financial feasibility and acceptance of the distribution.  Hopefully everything will fall into place and PC/OS will continue to grow, I of course will work to continue to bring simplified computing to the Linux space.

PC/OS update on ISO and MD5 problems

June 21, 2008

I have contacted ibiblio and it does appear to be a problem on their end.  I have recieved assistance from a PC/OS user who will be hosting the files temporarily until the problems get fixed with ibiblio.  Apparently some are experiencing problems, others arent but I want everyone to be HAPPY.  Thats the goal of this distro.  if you bought from on-disk since the release and are experiencing problems do let myself or on-disk know.  The ISO will be uploaded to them directly now to keep issues with the host from contaminating their source files.  If you want myself to send you media, all you need is to provide me with proof of purchase and I will send it to you FREE OF CHARGE.

Once again, I do apologize for any issues users may be having and I thank you for trying PC/OS.

PC/OS OpenWorkstation 2008 ISO and MD5 problems

June 17, 2008

I have had some reports that the ISO or md5 files are providing errors.  First, with the ISO stopping at 76 and 35 percent declaring I/O problems.  This is caused by hardware errors, a bad burn or faulty media.  Burn the media at a low speed, 2x or 4x preferrable, I know it takes a while but it produces less problems and the more chances of success, this is the constant with most operating system based ISO’s.  I have downloaded the ISO’s to several different machines and have produced successful burns.  I just finished an install of PC/OS OpenWorkstation 2008 on some 20 some machines with no errors except 1 machine and it was done with the ISO downloaded from the site.  The site is getting hit hard right now, in the 24 hr period I have logged a few thousand downloads.

Another problem may be the ISO file, make sure you check the size and make sure it matches the site.  I am also encouraging the use of the torrents.  The completed torrent files dont seem to be giving people installation errors.  I will keep investigating the issue with the ISO files and the MD5 files and will be posting updates here on my findings.  the MD5 issue is weird, as is the ISO problem since some people are experiencing problems and others are not.  Distromania is updating their database soon so that will help relieve some of the problems with Ibiblio.org.

We will find the problem that is plaguing some users and will resolve .  This includes a total remaster and refresh of the ISO if necessary.

I do apologize personally for these issues and do promise a solution sooner than later.

PC/OS OpenWorkstation 2008, OpenWorkstation 2008: Lite and Open Server System 2008 available for download

June 16, 2008

The PC/OS series is available for download this includes:

PC/OS OpenWorkstation 2008

PC/OS OpenWorkstation 2008: Lite

PC/OS Open Server System 2008

After two weeks of ‘for sale only’ the time has come for the downloads to begin of PC/OS.  How successful was the sale.  The project raised, minus paypal fees, $345.00 and quite a few On-Disk sales.  The demand was such I actually had to have 2 friends of mine answer the e-mails to process orders while I was working.  The sale bought a year of hosting and a new build machine.  Thank you so much for your support.

So whats new with PC/OS.  We build upon the Ubuntu Hardy Heron series.  there are a few changes from a stock Ubuntu install.

For starters the kernel update to 2.6.24-17 is included.  The Gstreamer codecs, Sun Java plugin, Flash are all included.

Multimedia wise we have the creation tools, VLC, Totem and Rhythmbox

For developers I included RealBASIC Standard Edition, OpenLDEV and Glade Interface Designer.  QT Designer was not included due to user feedback and I put in the more popular choices among my users.

The most notable in the networking section is Firefox 2 instead of Firefox 3 beta, Liferea feedreader and Skype replaces Ekiga. gufw, a graphical frontend to ufw is included.

For system admins, I included the Network Tools, Zenmap a graphical frontend to nmap as well as a graphical scheduler frontend to CRON, Likewise open is included as is Envy NG for video card driver installation.  An NTFS configuration tool is also included.

Productivity wise, OpenOffice.org 2.4 is included as is Sunbird 0.8.  Scribus was also brought up to date and Xsane for scanning documents and such is included.

In Open Server System 2008 the following changes are included.

Likewise Open, gufw and the new version of Webmin is also included.  Install scripts now live in the home directory for installation of MySQL Server, Postfix, Sun Java JDK and Ruby On Rails.  These options are left to the install scripts so admins can install what they want, MySQL was left out of the default install due to the fact some users use commercial databases and not MySQL so the option to install is still there.  There is also an Expansion pack downloadable from the site that includes all the tools from the Install Scripts.

The download options available are as follows:

The ISO’s  from the download site

The torrents are available as well.

Distromania hasnt updated their database yet so Ibiblio is housing the ISO’s if you experience slow downloads use the torrents.  There is also a update package for users of PC/OS 8.04  RC1 who dont want to hose their systems, it will be available by noon Monday if not sooner.

Once again I would like to thank all my beta testers, users and the community for making this release a success.
